Elephant and Lion Finger Puppets
Elephant and Lion Finger Puppets

This is a great project for teachers or parents and grandparents to involve young children in creating their own puppet toy.

What you will need…

  • Colored card.

    • 1 gray square 5” x 5”

    • 1 yellow square 5” x 5”

  • Colored markers (“textas”)

  • 1 pencil

  • 1 adult scissors

  • 1 child scissors

  • Hole punch

  • Protection sheet for table

Instructions for making your Elephant and Lion Finger Puppets…

  • With the aid of a plastic bowl that’s smaller than the square, trace a circle on each piece of colored paper

  • Elephant.

    • From my sketch in the video, draw eyes, ears and trunk

    • Draw 2 circles at the bottom and cut holes to put fingers through.  Make sure the holes are close enough together for the child’s fingers

    • Poke a hole in the middle of each circle and carefully cut out the circle (or use a hole punch) either side of the elephant’s trunk

  • Lion

    • Draw a wiggly line around the lion’s head and draw eyes and nose in pencil

    • Start cutting carefully around the elephant’s head and ears and the lion’s head

  • Check holes are large enough for your child’s fingers

  • Allow the child to freely colour the puppets

  • Now, placing the child’s fingers in the holes, you can play with the elephant and lion puppets, using different voices for each animal.

  • Have fun pretending that the animals are talking to each other and walking around.

Have fun with your finger puppets!  Children like to pretend and can use different voices for each animal. This develops their imagination skills.
